How to Choose a Football Agent: FIFA Rules Every Player Should Know

The Agent Says He Has a Club Ready for You. What Should You Sign?

Imagine a talented player receives a message from someone claiming to have contacts at several clubs. The conversation quickly moves to opportunities abroad, trials and professional contracts. The player is told that the most important step is to commit to the representative before another opportunity disappears.

For a young footballer trying to break into professional football, that promise can be difficult to ignore.

But agreeing to representation is a professional decision. It establishes a relationship that may affect a player’s career, finances and future choices.

The right question is not simply whether an agent knows people in football. It is whether the agent is properly qualified, what services are being promised and whether the agreement protects the player’s interests.

Start with the licence

FIFA’s Football Agent Regulations specify that only individuals licensed by FIFA are permitted to perform football agent services within the scope of those regulations.

These services include activities undertaken for or on behalf of clients with the purpose of concluding a football transaction, such as negotiating player employment, registration or transfers.

A person who has access to club officials is not automatically a licensed football agent. Equally, a business name or professional-looking social media profile should not be treated as evidence of a person’s licence.

Players should verify the representative’s status through FIFA’s official agent resources and seek clarification where anything is uncertain.

The agreement is not a formality

FIFA’s regulations require a written representation agreement before a football agent performs football agent services for a client.

The agreement must include essential information, including the names of the parties, the duration where applicable, the agent’s service fee, the nature of the services to be provided and the parties’ signatures.

For an agreement between an individual player or coach and an agent, the FIFA Football Agent Regulations provide for a maximum duration of two years. Automatic renewal provisions that purport to extend the agreement beyond that maximum are not valid under those regulations.

The rules also restrict an agent to one representation agreement with the same individual at a time. Before entering into or amending an agreement with an individual, the agent must inform the client in writing that independent legal advice should be considered and obtain written confirmation that the advice has either been obtained or declined.

These requirements give the player an opportunity to understand the relationship before committing to it.

Five questions to ask before signing

1. Are you a licensed football agent?

Verify the individual’s status. If someone is offering to provide the services of a football agent, ask for the information needed to check their licence.

2. What exactly will you do for me?

The agreement should describe the services rather than rely on broad statements such as managing your career or finding opportunities. Ask how the representative will communicate with you, what assistance will be provided and what falls outside the agreement.

3. What am I agreeing to pay?

Read the service-fee provisions carefully. Establish what the fee covers, when payment becomes due and what happens if no transaction is concluded. Do not make financial commitments based solely on a verbal promise.

4. How long am I committing to?

For an individual player or coach, the FIFA regulations limit the representation agreement to two years. Understand the start date, expiry date and the conditions for terminating the relationship. Never assume that an agreement is harmless simply because the person asking you to sign is familiar.

5. Can I get independent advice?

You should be able to understand the document before signing it. Consider having a qualified lawyer or suitably experienced adviser review its terms, especially where the agreement involves money, exclusivity or a long-term career commitment.

Extra protection when a player is under 18

The rules are more specific when representation involves a minor.

Under FIFA’s Football Agent Regulations, an approach to a minor or their legal guardian in relation to football agent services may only be made within the six months preceding the age at which the minor may sign their first professional contract under the law applicable where they will be employed. Prior written consent from the minor’s legal guardian is also required.

Additional conditions govern an agent’s authorisation and the enforceability of a representation agreement with a minor, including the involvement of the legal guardian as required by the applicable law.

Parents should not assume that every person approaching their child has the authority to represent a minor. Verify the agent’s licence and relevant authorisation, and ensure that the proposed arrangement is compliant with the applicable regulations.

An opportunity is not a guarantee

An agent may be able to introduce a player to clubs, negotiate on the player’s behalf and help manage certain aspects of a career. That does not mean the agent can guarantee selection, a contract, a work permit or a player’s success at a trial.

A professional relationship should be based on clearly defined services and realistic expectations.

Players should remain involved in their own careers, maintain copies of the documents they sign and make sure they understand any obligations they undertake.

The same advice applies to families. A genuine opportunity should withstand careful questions and proper checks. There is no reason to rush into an agreement simply because someone has presented a deadline.

A2Z Football Hub takeaway: Choose representation with the same seriousness you bring to choosing a club. Verify the licence, read the agreement, understand the fee and seek independent advice before signing.
